I saw this film about a month ago and, while I don’t think B&E were quite “pompous”, I pretty much agree with the overall review of the film (yes, including this arrangement of Tower of Song, which I heard again during the radio marathon yesterday), it didn’t bring anything new to the table. I will say it wasn’t the band members’ best appearance, especially the B&E parts. Didn’t quite fit in with the flow of the rest of the documentary, and felt staged – they came off almost as caricatures of themselves. I also got that sense from the rest of the audience at the screening – B&E were the least well received parts of the film.

the reviews of the movie that are bashing u2 are pretty amusing. poor leonard, as great as he is, probably wouldn’t have a film in the cinema at all if u2 were not supporting it. edge went to sundance, bono showed up at the toronto film fest. they did this out of respect for him, yet many of the reviews make it seem like u2 are hanging on cohen’s coattails or something.
i personally liked u2’s arrangement of the song, but the performance in the film does come off as VERY staged, replete with atrocious lip synching from leonard.
oh, and yes, bono is pompous. in a good way 😉

I haven’t actually seen the movie yet, but I’m not so sure there wouldn’t have been one at all if U2 hadn’t supported it. Besides U2 there are more great pullers in the movie. Nick Cave, for example, has been involved in each of Hal Willner’s “Came So Far For Beauty” Leonard Cohen tribute nights and will also be at the one in Dublin in October.

e – agreed there are many other spectacular artists in the film, and surely it would have been made either way as mel gibson produced it, but u2’s involvement and support can’t have hurt its getting a wider cinematic release and some “mainstream” attention.
