You may remember our previous discussion on Rick Rubin and how you’d feel about him producing their next album. Well, all those in favour may find a little surprise, spoiler and delight in the following article discussing Wisconsin-based band the Robins. Seems our gut feeling was right once again.
Overseeing the album is Greg Fidelman, an engineer/producer who worked with Rick Rubin on albums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down and Audioslave. The Robins and Fidelman will be ensconced at Sound City studio in Van Nuys (the same place where Nirvana made “Nevermind” and Tom Petty made “Wildflowers” and “Damn the Torpedoes”) through the end of the month and again in October.
Why not September? Because Fidelman and Rubin have to go to London to engineer tracks for U2’s upcoming album at Abbey Road Studios.
Let’s play “guess the new album title”. Oh, and thumbs up to the Robins.
The album will be called ‘Flip-flops’.
The album will be called ‘Flip-flops’.
or maybe… black leather lego rock and roll.
hmm well…
THIS SOUNDS EXCITING, no?
seems like there’s some serious activity around this next record, and maybe (for once) I’m right about my prediction, that THIS record will be out rather sooner! than later haha 😉

I was thinking “Stories from the Sea” but PJ already did that, and Amazon would get confused.
Maybe someone can do some digging around the domain registries again?
What I wanna know is, how do they manage to make a record when all they do is lie around on the beach and go boating with pretty girlies all day? Sigh. What a life.

Did you see The Edge, Larry or Adam in those pictures?
🙂
They’re the ones making the record. All Bono has to do is convince them he’ll have lyrics ready on time. 😛

Though I do seem to remember reading somewhere that Larry was spotted in New York somewhere… On crutches, no less. He just can’t get along with those lift flip flops.

Bold Speculation Below!
the new album will be called “All That You Waited For While We Took A Few Months Off And Tried To Save The World While You Were Watching Making The Band 3 On MTV”… or as it would affectionately be called by U2 fans, “ATYWFWWTAFMOATTSTWWYWWMTB2OM”
T-shirts for the tour will only be available in long sleeve with the title stretching from sleeve to sleeve. pre-sale tickets for their Omaha show go on sale friday! get the special code now before brokers do!
also the next few months will be spent with bold speculation of the groups direction after an old 30 second real audio clip of “wake up dead man” appears on the internet (oh wait that already happen in around xmas of ’96). top news events that will happen on u2 fanzines over the next few months:
1) someone will make-up a rumor of a U2/Beastie Boys collaboration dubbed only as “the Rubin Effect” that will cause both instant support and outcry from the u2faithful
2) Bono will tell a reporter that the new album is “a good pop album” but the reported will misquote him and write that U2 is making a “hip-hop album.” these rumors will be further “proved” when Bono is spotted in southern France with Jay-Z again
3) some fan will lament about the “good old days” when Zooropa was released

Then again… Didn’t Bono say sometime last year he was interested in hip hop and wanted to explore a hip hop avenue for the next record? Seriously, that might be one of the few mainstream genres of music that haven’t fully touched (save for “Big Girls are Best” which I feel was very hip hop and freaking awesome!) So what if U2 went in a slight hip hop direction? Wouldn’t that actually be kinda interesting?
I, for one, want to continue to hear them doing things they’ve never done before. While I can’t say the last two albums excited me as much as Zooropa or POP, or even OS1, they were different as usual from their previous efforts. As long as they’re constantly evolving, I’ll respect that. If they rehash anything, I’ll be a bit peaved.
My only argument against that tact is I would still love for them to go back and finish POP, but finish it as POP… know what I mean? Don’t do Discotheque like the Best of Garage band version, that makes no sense. Do it as the album you were intending to make but ran out of time doing. Maybe thats impossible now. I would also LOVE an OS2. Passengers was one of my favorite U2 albums of all time. (argue the point if you want… but you can’t include a song on a U2 best of – miss sarajevo – if it wasn’t a U2 song…)
Cheers!

Excuse my ignorance but at what point in the album making process does ‘engineering’ happen? Does this mean that they have fully formed songs that need working on that they are at the early stages??

Please. No Rubin.

Sorry for the delays in approving once again.
@Simon. Yep, Abbey Road Studios. Beatles amongst others by the way :-] They did a film night there recently that looked pretty hot.
So U2 are making a hip hop album? Awesome! And isn’t Rubin just the man for it… he’s so eclectic. As for the Beastie Boys and U2 collaboration, didn’t I hear somewhere that was scheduled for Hawaii as well?
Oh, and Bono’s starting a new peacekeeping mission between the members of Bauhaus as well. Awesome! I wanna be there when the two divas duke it out.
God, I love you people. You’re great. How come we get all the fun fans? Oh wait, that’s because we ban everyone else…
(we don’t really!)

There is no God. Or Goddess. I’ll be in Japan when U2 tour Melbourne Australia, and I get back to Melbourne when U2 tour Japan! UGH UGH UGH UGH UGH !!! Damn you to hell, McGuinness …. damn you to HELL! !!!
Ok, I didn’t mean that, I love you Paul. I’ll have a great holiday in Japan, U2 or no U2. But geez, their concerts in Australia are going to ROCK! Let’s start guessing what tracks they’ll preview while on tour!

i would also love to see a self titled album next, please. thankyou.

Please say y’all are being facetious when you hope U2’d try to do a hip-hop record … please!
While I’ve always thought they are at their best when they push boundaries, they should leave hip hop to the hip-hopsters.
Songs like “Mofo” worked because it was rock-n-roll infused with elements of other musical types: Scat singing, some hip-hop loops and even some record-scratching. But at its heart it’s a raw, punch-you-in-your-throat rock song.
Songs like “Playboy Mansion” or “Miami” were, in my opinion, flops. They were throw-away songs that made it to the final record because of all the time pressures they were under to finish “Pop” and get out on tour.
Even though I’ve picked on “Pop” here, in retrospect since HTDAAB and ATYCLB, I’ve looked back on that record with fondness. While the last two records were good, they were, for the most part, “safe” in their musical direction. I thought the last two tours were carbon-copies of each other, with only minor changes to the setlist and set design — but pretty much the same thing.
My fear against their hip hop direction goes back to a pre-“Achtung Baby” dream I had in college. I woke up one morning and told my roommate that I had a dream that U2’s new record was called “Packin’ Some Heat” … and that the record cover had U2 dressed in bandanas, flannel shirts with only the top collar button buttoned, baggy pants hanging off their butts, and with Larry reaching into his drawers like he was going for a gun. OY VEY! It was very NWA — but in a bad way.
I can’t say which direction they should go — they should just be honest with themselves and their music .. and that’s the best they can do. If they try to force a musical direction upon themselves in order to stay “cool” or “relevant”, then they’re doing themselves a big disservice.
WORD!

“Abbey Road Part II: We’re Stealing It Back”
Great news, U2 fans!!
Rubin + Abbey Road + short time frame = Masterpiece
Speaking of Abbey Road, Booker T & the MGs recorded an instrumental cover album called “McLemore Avenue” mere months after Abbey Road was released…if you love the Beatles’ Abbey Road, do yourself a favor and check out “McLemore Avenue”, you won’t be disappointed.

Bono says a lot of things when they’re recording a new album, so I wouldn’t pay any attention to him! HTDAAB was meant to be all rock’n’roll, but look how it turned out. I seriously hope though that Bono’s comment doesn’t mean the new album will be full of duets with Kanye West and Mary J Blige.
The last two records didn’t gel as records — they’re full of fantastic songs that I love, but as complete records … there’s just something missing. They’re a bunch of great singles, rather than being a fantastic record, if you know what I mean. I’d like to see U2 get back to making complete records, like Achtung Baby, Zooropa, The Joshua Tree.
Besides, I remember Bono making the Hip Hop comment when recording Pop! And look how Pop turned out! If trying new techniques means new sounds, then I’m all for it. Whatever the band says now, when they’ve finished mixing the new record, chances are it’ll sound completely different to what they thought it’d be at the start!
I’m listening to Zooropa … oh how I love this record …

Much as I’d like to agree with this, I still think we should remember the original post:
Rubin is going to ‘engineer’ some U2 tracks in September. I’m not a technician, but is engineering different to producing? I think so; and, given the band’s recent penchant for taking a long time to make a record, I think this means we still won’t see any new album until Summer / Autumn 2007 at the very earliest.
Hopefully we’ll hear some new tracks on the Oz tour etc, as some of the Eze stuff was quite nice IMO.

I bet they drop Rubin and the other guy just like Mr. Thomas. Like a hot potato.
Then they run to Eno/Lanois. I hope. Heck…even Mr. Lillywhite!
And. There’s a big difference between engineering tracks and actual producing. I just hope they don’t try to release a double album of crap…like RHCP.

Jim,
Engineering is something that is done during the production of tracks. It pretty much involves mic’ing guitar cabinets, drums, vocals, setting up levels, monitoring vocals, etc. It can be a number of things. The engineer is usually the producer’s right hand man…making sure all the technical things are taken care of so that the creative ideas of the producer go along easier. Some producers can do it all. Like, Brian Eno, and Daniel Lanois. Even then they still, usually, employ some folks to help out. Hope this helps.

engineering is where it all happens capturing it live. production/mixing/mastering is after. so, in an ideal world, this could be engineered by rubin then produced by flood/edge/eno = OMFG.

sorry to be a pain in the ass ;), but….
production is not after, would that be the case production and mixing would be one and the same process… production is the process of making the record, intellectually, as a guiding process for the band, whatever. it certainly brings with it style and the use of certain equipment, a certain setup (both very distinctive in the case of lanois and eno..). procution is a process that starts before the first note is recorded, and ends before somewhat with the mastering of a record.
just my two cents…

Bernhard’s right about producing a record. I asked my sound engineer/muso housemate, and he clarified that engineering is the entire process of recording and mixing songs. So as an engineer, Rubin will be midwife to the tracks at birth, and be their nanny until they’re all grown up and ready to leave the studio. Here’s hoping it’s a healthy baby.
I can’t wait. XD

even if rubin will only be “engineering” tracks, I think he will oversee what is cooking in the kitchen, throwing in comments here and there. rubin is a rather passive producer anyway, I always remember the pics with jr cash recording in his old hut and rubin lying outstretched on the floor quietly listening under a huge beard and black sunglasses haha ,))….what a guy. buddha is a start-up against this man 😉 (uhhm… I haven’t said this last one….)

I don’t mind if Rubin is just there to make really good coffee and massage Bono’s feet … it doesn’t really matter what his role is because we’re getting a new U2 record ! ! ! ! Rejoice ! ! ! ! XD

‘Producing’ a record and the ‘production’ of a record are not mutually exclusive terms; though they are similar. It depends on the project, and the needs of the artist. Producing is usually the creative mind behind the curtain; guiding, helping, and even pushing the band/artist to attain a certain goal/sound. Production of a record encompasses the whole bag…and employs many, many, many people. During the mixing stage, the producer/band are usually present, and even if not present, they are still involved in some capacity. The Arnie Acostas of the world are the ones that are usually able to finish their job relatively unbothered. Or, unscathed, depending upon the artist/band in question.

Awesome, thanks Caroline.
That’s an interesting discography Fidelman has, very eclectic. I know he’s just an engineer, not a producer, but I hope he’ll bring different ideas to the U2 recording table. I love U2’s last two albums, but a third repeating the same ground will be too much — two’s fine, three’s a crowd, as they say. Time for new sounds, and Bono has the haircut to do it. I’m really looking forward not just to the new record, but what Fidelman and Rubin give to it.
