Geesh! The U2log.com staff go on holiday to follow some of our other favorite bands, only to come back and find that U2 have left Island Records, they will be releasing another Best Of collection, and Bono attended the New York Film Festival. What else happened?! Did Edge grow a beard? We weren’t gone that long, were we?
Metro Ireland reported the gory details about the breakup with Island Records in its free Dublin newspaper (click image for bigger version). The image they used of the New York Film Festival visit was a lot more flattering than the Dirty Old Man shot The Sun used in its report.
No kidding! I was very quietly breakfasting with a toasted bagel, Wu Tang juice and the freebie Metro newspaper at Norman’s gorgeous Nude cafe in Dublin this morning and… wtf?
I didn’t actually believe the article at first, so had to wait til I got home to Amsterdam to actually double check. Very bizarre and totally unexpected to us peasants 🙂

Some of us still are…
And some of us haven’t recovered yet.

I wonder when U2.com will announce the news to us. honestly, It was hard to believe at first.
but anyway, they have their reasons for the move, I am sure about that. and the release of the best of makes sense with the label-change.
happy headaches!

The new Best Of wipes clean their contract with Island, methinks. It’s also coming with a bonus live cd (Vertigo Milan) and a DVD is on its way too. Maybe the stuff they did with Rubin didn’t work out the way they’d hoped (or the label change forced them to delay it). So they had to scrap plans of a new album by Christmas, and the 18 Singles collection is the compromise? Who knows. I hope they told Larry …

I am in the wilds of Borneo (um… West Cork) with very little internet access.
Has anyone reported there will be a new song/single on the new best of? I’m sure the news must be out there already. I was lucky enough to hear a few bars of the new tune sung to me over a glass of wine earlier this week. Sort of 70’s pop/crooner-Sweetest Thing kind of vibe.
Or if this is news, well then you didn’t hear it from me. 🙂

I didn’t hear no West Cork birdie… Anyone? Nope. Definitely not. Nuh uh.
And you are officially an internet addict. How do you even manage internet access in West Cork, of all places? :-]

Caroline – The Saints Are Coming will be on U218 Singles (the album title) and will be the (first) single. There will be one more unidentified new song on there from the Rick Rubin sessions.

Switching record labels and putting out best off’s….
Entering ‘Rolling Stones mode’?

If I understand correctly…
U2 are currently with Interscope for the USA, Mercury for the UK, and (still) Island for the rest of the world.
The new Best Of (which does contain a new song, yes) and the charity single with Green Day (The Saints are Coming) are both being released on the new Mercury label, if I understand correctly.
The old record deal with Island was renegotiated years back; i.e. this Best Of release is not just a case of finishing out the contract.
Someone please correct me if any of this is misinformation!

Finally got access again, at Dublin airport.
@ popartist
It was the unidentified and as yet untitled new song I heard a few lines of.
@ jimbo
I don’t remember if it sounded like any of the beach clips.
The words I remember are something like ‘Look what love has done for us’ or maybe ‘What has love come to’.

Sorry cindy, but I have to say that you *have* been gone a long time. This site hasn’t been updated very often since the tour started :(.

@bcrt et al: I am out on tour with another band and writing for four other music sites. It’s not always about U2 — which is a sentiment the entire U2log.com staff share. We all have interests in other bands and write/manage other music web sites.
