The Edge parts with 1975 Gibson Les Paul.
I though the Explorer was his favourite?
Still, the Les Paul has some history too… I know it was used before, but isn’t it first documented in the 2nd Pride video? It’s in the Fly vid. and he used it opening Zoo Station, also Until The End of TW on the same tour…
If it was me, I’d bid it up and then turn around and sell it back to him. But I’m busy that day…
more than 24 hours after picking up the news I’m still quite baffled. this is a truly remarkable thing to do for edge. that guitar was amongst 3 to 4 of his most important instruments. whatever the reasons apart from charity behind this step is, I think we could all learn something from this act. (on a sidenote, I wonder what dallas will get him for a replacement…)
the fly video was a only promo guitar as far as I know, def. not the one he’s giving away, since there’s different (stock) pickups (with covers) in there… also the finsih of the guitar is quite a bit lighter (even though cream) than his reg. two customs back then….
I’m so relieved that he’s not auctioning the Explorer! It’s weird to feel grief over a guitar, but I actually felt really sad when I thought the article was referring to the Explorer. It’s so strongly associated with Edge and the band that it felt like a huge loss to have it end up in someone’s private collection. Luckily that’s not the case, so I feel much better!
