Harry and Paul do Bono and The Edge

The jury’s still out on the wisdom of bringing back Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield to the Beeb. The Fast Show it’s not. As Stephen ‘godlike genius’ Fry said… sketch comedy is a young man’s game. Miaow. But what we really like to know … why is Bono wearing The Edge’s sneakers?

  1. I was quite looking forward to having Paul & Harry back on the telly, well Paul at least for sure, The Fast Show was indeed legendary, although quite possibly of its time.

This new show is appallingly bad in my book, I’ve barely cracked a smile at anything, with the exception of the articulate and eloquently spoken builders who drop their guard whenever the female of the species passes by. Other than that I’ve found it to be shockingly unfunny, dated, uninspired, unimaginative, out of touch, and a waste of 30 minutes worth of prime time television, and once you have seen one episode, it’s a case of you’ve seen them all, because it’s more or less the same thing the following week, same old tired material week in week out.

As for their Bono & Edge send up’s… I recognise U2 aren’t above a bit of fun-poking, and I’m sure as most of us U2 lovers would recognise, U2 would be the first in the queue to have a laugh at themselves, they’re certainly not above it. However, Paul & Harry’s U2 sketches are just plain bad! Channel 4’s ‘Absolutely’ team did a much better send up in the early 90’s as did ‘Hale & Pace’ during the Zoo TV period.

  3. I’m not familiar with Paul and Harry, or the other British sketch shows, but I agree that there are better U2 sketches out there. I think the best by far is by Ben Stiller, who I actually mistook for the real Bono while flipping channels! A couple sketches (like the Lucky Clovers commercial) are available on the Ben Stiller Show dvd, but unfortunately the one I love (Rattle & Hum Bono staging a protest in a little girl’s living room because her mom is forcing her to study for the SAT test) has never been released…

  5. None of them ever get the accents right, though. That puts me off immediately. Generic Irish accent doesn’t work.
