  1. What makes me cringe is how the media sensationalises Larry’s opinion! Ah, nothing gets the tabloids running like some good ol’ celebrity bashing.

It’d be nice if the people with power and money were all like Mother Theresa, but they’re not. Bono’s a pragmatist underneath that suit of idealism — if you want world governments to address issues of poverty and inequality, you have to talk with whoever calls the shots on the day. And you can’t pick and choose who you haggle with — you treat them all equally, Left and Right and everyone in between. I learned that the hard way myself many years ago with Amnesty International. As Bono said, when you’re on the ground doing the hard work for a cause bigger than yourself, things aren’t as black & white.

So Larry, build a bridge mate, or else you’ll have the producers of Grumpy Old Men calling you.

  3. PS Just wanna add that I’m ranting about the media carping on about Bono’s political/charity work making them cringe, not Larry. If there’s such a huge rift as the tabloids and Bono-haters would have us believe, there wouldn’t be a U2 putting out a new record right now. And I’m sure — I know — Larry’s quote has been blown out of proportion. They’re still friends afterall. Christ, I have friends who voted for the likes of John Howard, Tony Blair, and Dubya! Dinner parties at my place are interesting, to say the least. I’m a soft Left (according to my hard Left friends), and I detest Dubya, but my respect-amp went past 11 when Bono met him about Africa and AIDS — it takes balls to do that, to swallow your pride and do what it takes for the cause. Does Bono think the ends justify the means? Nah, I think Bono’s just doing what (he thinks) Jesus would do. That, and he likes being where the contradiction is, that’s the place where we need to be to get our world in better shape, where the arguments are.
