  1. I got to say that I’m disappointed with the new cover, especially with all the great covers U2’s had in the past. Sure the cover reflects the name of the album, but it’s so….dull and boring. Honestly, they should have gone with Corbijn on this.

  3. Hrmm, when I first saw that I thought it was just a space for the album title. It’s definitely got a zen vibe happening now. It’s like a focal point in paintings, it really draws your eye, although it breaks the rule of thirds a bit which is okay. I love Sugimoto’s photography so I’m happy as Larry (figuratively). What do you think, Caro? Reminds me of Stipe’s stuff for New Adventures in Hi Fi — which is a fantastic cd, possibly REM’s best. Is this the sound U2 have gone for, a static, sonic soundscape of black & white photography the colour of tv static?

By the way Caro, what happened to the member profiles? I changed my name (jedi was a spur of the moment thing), used my gmail, but now it’s gone back to Jedi. Still workin’ on the site?

  5. I like that they made a radical choice. Probably would have preferred it without the equal sign, but it does make you *think* about the image rather than just admire the pretty picture. And yeah, definitely an Adventures in Hi Fi and Joy Division vibe. They’re aiming for greatness, which is always admirable. I’m glad it’s not a band photo. And they must be pretty sure of themselves not to opt for the standard Corbijn shot – I mean, they’ve always gone for the comfortable and reliable, it’s nice to see them break away from their standard route.

No idea what happened to your profile, I don’t think I changed anything specifically. What had you changed your name to? Perhaps I changed something in the code at some point.

Update: You can probably change it in your own user account settings. There’s a dropdown to switch between username and nickname

  7. Regarding the “equals sign” – I believe the intention is that these are actually two seperate lines: the top one above the horizon, the lower one below the horizon. Thus, No Line On The Horizon.

  9. Yes, the first time I saw the photo I (without the lines) I thought New Adventures in Hi-Fi and then Joy Division a few seconds later.

With respect to the equal sign, someone else pointed out that it is the logo used by the Human Rights Campaign and I can see it being used that way – equality between sky & sea, between black & white (reference to change in US following Obama election?). And from some other pictures I saw, it looks like the equal sign or parallel lines might be part of the branding associated with the record.

I’m happy they went unconventional too although I admit their use of black and white or primary colors does seems like a rut sometimes. Bring back the colors from the flag of Zooropa!

  11. I love new album cover. It has two equality signs on it. Have You notice that? Second one was made by God. Hiroshi Sugimoto only took picture of it . . .
