It hurts me to say this, but… I agree with the article that NLOTH is over-rated. I said at launch that I couldn’t understand the five-out-of-five-star ratings. It’s better than Joshua Tree or Actung Baby?! No f*cking way, it doesn’t come close! Streets, Still Haven’t Found, With Or Without You, Bullet, Running TO Stand Still, One, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Until The End Of The World… these songs are memorable. Half the songs on NLOTH I’ve already forgotten, and the other half aren’t sticking in my consciousness the way past albums did. I think ATYCLB has better songs (the first half of it that is). The only thing I disagree with is Magnificent — I love this song. But the rest of the album is just *shrug*. Edge is playing paint-by-numbers. Where’s the inventiveness of Achtung, Zooropa, and Pop we were promised? NLOTH is Bomb Part II. I hope the next album gives us what was promised in all the pre-launch hype.

Jedi is spot on with his comments there IMHO, I think the 5-star reviews had more to do with McG’s clout in the industry than anything else – though it must be said, I thought the album was pretty darn good upon my first listen – but it just doesn’t have the staying power of a true ‘classic’. U2 could put out an album of nursery rhymes and it would still sell well enough and critics would still sing them high praise. Tis a bit of a shame, I mean the tour will be awesome as U2 tours always are – but when I fell in love with the band, it was because of their social relevance and willingness to say what had to be said – qualities that I don’t see much anymore in the band. Again, something I put down to McGuinness more than anyone else.

So now the reviews are “payola” of a sort. Please, take off the tinfoil hats.
The record is still fantastic to my ears. And my ears are impeccable. It’s a classic and it just gets better the more I listen to it.
Bomb Pt II? Someone needs a listening lesson.
