NLOTH best album of 2009? Maybe it’s just me, but am I the only one who isn’t enamoured with NLOTH? Every album up to ATYCLB (well, except most of October) has pushed all my buttons, taken me to places I’ve never been. HTDAAB had a few great songs, but as an album it just doesn’t gel. And NLOTH — I want to like it, but I’m finding I’m listening to Pop again for the first time since 1998. And I’m loving Pop, I find it far more interesting to listen to than NLOTH, even if it’s flawed and unfinished. I’ve been struggling with this crisis of faith all year, and it’s the first time I’ve admitted it — I just don’t get the 5 star raves. The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby were game changers, there’s no way NLOTH is better than those two — and I’m talking about the ‘it’ factor, not technical skill & musical know-how (which NLOTH has in abundance). In fact, I’m just gonna say it out loud — NLOTH BORES THE HELL OUT OF ME.
Uh oh, here comes the lynch mob with torches and rope…

I’m just the opposite. I didn’t find ATYCLB and HTDAAB worthy. I didn’t like the albums. I skipped more than I listened to. Both had some really great songs but both felt flat to me when it came to the whole album.
Especially HTDAAB. If it was vinyl or cassette, I probably would have not listened to anything but the A side.
NLOTH works for me. For the first time I’m loving the entire album. There is only one song I want to skip “White as Snow”. Seeing the shows live this year made me fall that much deeper in love with the album. And I can honestly say I think NLOTH is going to end up one of my all time favorite U2 albums.
My favorites? Unforgettable Fire. Zooropa. Pop. Original Soundtracks No. 1. Can you see how this one might fit with the others?
I’m happy it’s ending up in some best of lists for the year. Maybe it will keep U2 from apologizing for it like they still do with Pop.
No lynch mob here. Hey I’m the guy who hated Achtung Baby. 🙂

*gasp* You hate Achtung Baby?! Say it ain’t so, Aaron! 😛
Heheh, everyone has personal taste. Like I said, NLOTH is the best technical and knowledgable album the lads have made. But I just can’t get into it. So maybe it’s me, after 25 years of listening to U2, I need new sounds. I prefer U2’s imperfections to their perfections.

“hated” – it grew on me over the years, and seeing songs live certainly helped. But at the time i didn’t have a lot of interest in it. probably didn’t help i got frost bite trying to get it, ended up rather sick at the same time, and just associate that album with a bad time in my life I’d rather forget.
One of the reasons I loved Zooropa so much though, is it was the album that brought me back after two away. NLOTH? Doing the same. Bringing me back after a few away.
Everyone’s got their own taste indeed. 🙂
