Dave Fanning champions U2 singer Bono in RTE’s search for ‘Ireland’s Greatest’. Bono is the only popculture hero left in the competition. He is up against Irish leaders, politicians and historical figures Michael Collins, Mary Robinson, John Hume and James Connolly. Fanning’s portrait was broadcast on the 27th of September. The final decision will be made by public vote.
Fast-talking Fanning has recently published his autobiography entitled ‘The Thing is’ which details the unique story of his role in the launch of U2 and his ongoing friendship with the band, delving into their humble beginnings and rise to fame. Fanning joined Irish DJ (and frontman of Something Happens) Tom Dunne in the Newstalk studios today to talk about his book (U2 content starts 9 minutes into the interview).

As a completely biased commenter on a U2 fan page, I’d say that Bono is second only to St. Patrick in terms of great Irishmen.
Give the snakes a vote, and Bono wins.

Bono is more Steve Irwin with snakes than St Patrick. 😉
Love U2. Love Bono.
But I don’t think Bono needs a “Bono Is Awesome” tribute.
Bono aggrandizes himself enough for an army. He doesn’t need us to do it. Plus – praise like this only lights up the Bono-haters like firecrackers.
I think Bono needs us to challenge him a bit more. It’s good for him, good for the people he helps and good for U2. I’ve been fan since 1982 and they need some help right now.
Do a doc on something interesting like, when will we see U2’s next breakthrough Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby? I’d tune in for that.
St. Patrick was welsh.
Then Bono wins!
