U2 360 Berlin, July 19, 2009
U2 surprised the Berlin audience with a quiet, accoustic version of Stay and let 3 fans, who all had carried signs proclaiming their skills (“guitar + me = angel of harlem”), take over the 360 stage for Angel of Harlem. The three musicians, on bass, guitar and drums (the fan says: “I played the kit, Larry played the left tom and hit-hat? and splashed the left crash from the two on the left side as well.”), played the song perfectly alongside The Edge and Larry – including transitions and coda for snippets of Man in the Mirror and Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough, while Adam stood by to enjoy the spectacle. Sound problems hampered the show a little and Bono was seen losing his cool a little during One, practically shoving his guitar back in the hands of his roadie. MLK was a little out of tune, and Bono had problems with his in-ear monitors. During Walk On things got out of hand again and Bono told the band to ‘slow down, slow down’. Near the end of the show, Bono led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday for Nelson Mandela.

U2 at the Echo Awards: Boots over Berlin
After the Grammies and the Brits, U2 took their opening act-performance to Berlin’s Echo Awards, adapting the background visuals for the night, with some German and European flag images reminiscent of their Zooropa days.
“Berlin welcomes U2”
Cool video from U2tour.de capturing the display welcoming U2 to the O2 in Berlin where the band are performing at the Echo Music Awards.
U2 arrived in Berlin yesterday. Bono first met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, to discuss the ONE organisation. In the early afternoon the band did interviews before going to the O2 Arena for their dress rehearsal. The show will be broadcast on ARD television and Fritz radio from 8.15pm CET. (via U2tour.de)
